Chapter Nineteen
When I came downstairs that night, the party was in full swing. A crowd milled about in the living room, glasses of varying-colored liquids in their hands. A few faces turned in my direction and nodded at me before returning to their individual conversations. Sebastiano slid up beside me, a glass in his hand.
âI have something for you,â he said as he pulled a small, dark blue velvet box from his pocket and handed it to me. I opened it and almost fainted dead away. A magnificent teardrop-shaped diamond pendant necklace presented itself. My breath caught before it dawned on me that this was most likely a paste or synthetic copy. However, I could not have cared less if it was real or fake. It was beautiful.
Sebastiano lifted the necklace from inside the box, walked around behind me, pulled the gold chain to the back of my neck and closed the clasp. The gem fell right into my cleavageâscant though it was. It went perfectly with my black dress, studded with what looked like diamond dust and a plunging neckline that almost reached my navel. Mother would have a hissy fit if she could see me now.
âBella. Bella!â he exclaimed. âIt looks wonderful on you.â His words caught the attention of The Duchess and Nicholas who turned to see what the fuss was all about. I raised my hand to caress the huge stone, but the hook came undone, and the diamond slipped unceremoniously down the front of my dress. Before I could even begin to retrieve the gem, Nicholas appeared at my side and whispered in my ear.
âDo you need help, McKenna? I can reach that diamond for you.â I threw a venomous look at him. He was fully aware of what happened each time he breathed in my ear. All those damn nerve endings of mine went into overdrive, throwing me into a state of near panic.
âNo, thank you. I can do it myself,â I said and turned my nose in the air. I walked out into the empty foyer and reached down into the plunging neckline of my dress. Nicholas followed me out and stood behind me, his warm breath hitting the back of my neck. The chain had hooked itself over the band of my panties, and I retrieved the necklace from its landing place. I reached back and put the chain back around my neck, being sure this time it was hooked securely. I gave Nicholas a satisfied look. He shrugged and walked back into the party with that stupid smirk on his face again. Have I mentioned how much he irritates me and how much I want to wrap my legs around his waist? Iâm sure I have.
Standing in the doorway, I surveyed the room. It was abundantly clear that everyone in the room had money. The women wore jewelry and plenty of it. Both the men and the women were impeccably dressed in expensive designer outfits. A tall couple stood over in
